Happy Friday loves!
Today we are talking all things business, putting yourself out there, and making a lasting first impression. AKA we’re in #GirlBoss mode. I thought I would share with you guys some of my personal tips and tricks that I use when I network with people!
After all, if any of you are in “creative” majors like: social media, film, broadcast journalism, theatre, etc…it is crucial to be constantly networking with people because you never know who can help you out in your future career/who you are going to meet.
Networking in general is a great thing to do no matter what major/industry you are in!
So let’s get started:
What is networking?
Ok so networking isn’t just about being “Hey! My name is ____ here’s my info” there’s more to it (well at least in my opinion) and it is definitely not about asking someone for a favor. Networking is about connecting and establishing long-term, mutually beneficial relationships with the people you meet! Whether that is at a convention or talking to some in line while you wait for your coffee. I think if we all get off of our phones for a just a few minutes each day (including myself) we’ll see that there are so many possibilities to network around us. All it takes is a little self-confidence, kindness, and a business card or two.
Why networking is important to your success:

I believe networking plays a key role in your success because when you invest in relationships — it will eventually pay you back with amazing benefits (in your career and personal life). Networking will help you stay on top of important trends in your industry and help you meet future mentors (or clients). Most important though building connections with people will help you “get your feet wet” in whatever industry you are trying to get into, and it will help you grow more in your career.
My tips and tricks for networking:
1- Slide into the DMS 😉
Yeah you heard me…slide into people’s DMS! I mean don’t be creep when you do it lol, but this is seriously how I network sometimes! Make sure to have “online etiquette” and introduce yourself, why you’re reaching out, and offer to meetup somewhere if the person lives near you. Then, if the person responds and is willing to help you make sure to tell them thank you!
2- Share your passion with others
When you’re networking it’s mostly likely that you are reaching out to people who share the same interests as you or have a career that you want to achieve one day. So be enthusiastic when talking to people about your love for ___. Make a lasting first impression on someone by sharing a story with them that inspired you to take interest in a particular major or career path. When you are talking about something that you LOVE it’s so easy for the person you’re talking to, to feel joy or instantly relate to what YOU have to say. Therefore, when you get other people to share their passion with you, it creates a memorable two-way conversation.
3- Follow up
Once you are done having a cute little coffee date with your new friend and talking about things you guys both love, remember to follow up. Networking is when the conversations begins NOT ends! If you had a really great conversation with someone then make sure you stay in touch with them, that way your contact remembers you.
A simple but very important thing to do is…SMILE! By smiling you instantly come off as a warm and inviting person vs. being a negative Nancy that no one wants to be around! So always remember to be happy and smile!
5- Business Cards
Last but certainly not least is to always have your business cards on hands! I cannot tell you how many times my business cards have come in handy. If you are serious about wanting to grow in your industry and meet new people, then having business cards are key! I ordered my business cards from BasicInvite.com and I love how they turned out. They are super professional but also have a nice chic touch to them that will for sure leave a lasting impression on the people I give them too. What I love about Basic Invite is that their unique business cards (along with the rest of stationery items that they sell) and they offer a variety of colors for their cards, as well as instant previews when you are designing your stationery item(s).
They have the best business cards and even offer them in foil! Foil business cards are available in gold, silver, and rose gold. Imagine handing out rose gold business cards wow that’s an aesthetic!😏You can even order custom samples that allows you the ability to order a printed sample of your actual business card so you can see exactly how it will print as well as the paper quality before you place your final order. I seriously love Basic Invite for doing this because other companies don’t have this feature, so you kind of have to hope for the best and pray what you ordered comes out good!
