It’s the question that everyone is ALWAYS asking…How do I get my engagement up on Instagram?
If you’ve been feeling like the algorithm has been sucking all of your time and energy out of you recently because your posts aren’t doing so well or reaching as many people as they used to, then I’m here to help (hopefully haha)! I am by no means this big time “influencer/blogger” but I would like to think that I have a few tricks up my sleeves about how to boost your engagement on Insta!
Hold the phone, what do you mean by engagement?
Instagram engagement is more than just the number of likes slapped on to your picture, but it’s about how many people comment on your post ENGAGING with your content! This can also go for how many people reply to your Instagram stories or comment on your IGTV videos, etc…Personally, I think engagement is more important than the number of followers you have (although, most brands do not see it that way) because when you’re engaging with your audience, you are getting to know them on a personal level! I’ve made some Insta besties from interacting on their accounts and vice versa! It’s incredible how great social media can be, but it does have its downfalls!
For starters, do NOT beat yourself over a post doing poorly! Don’t do it, girl! Plus, at the end of the day, it’s just social media! I think sometimes we ALL get caught up in numbers and comparing ourselves to others online that some days we need to take a step back and realize that there’s SO much more to life than an app.
But, at the same time, Instagram can be super fun and gives so many amazing opportunities for users. So I think many of us have a love/hate relationship with it, I know I do.?
With that being said, I know the sucky feeling when you post a photo that you were SUPER excited about only to see it perform poorly on Instagram…it’s kind of like a slap in the face and GIRL can I relate to that! Ever since IG changed the algorithm back in July, it seemed like everyone started struggling BIG time with their engagement (even prominent bloggers with 100k), so just know you’re not alone!
I noticed my engagement was down from August to end of September (kind of the beginning of October), and I was pretty bummed about it that I didn’t even have the motivation to post a lot!
Skip to mid-October I FINALLY saw my engagement go up on my posts and I started to feel so much better about my presence on the ‘gram! So, how did I somehow beat the algorithm and get my engagement to go up again? Keep reading and you’ll find out!
Tips & Tricks:
Keep in mind that these “tricks” I’ve been doing has personally helped my engagement go up. I know there are so many different articles that say “hashtags don’t work” or “Instagram doesn’t like engagement groups,” but I don’t even know what to believe anymore because so many people are saying so many different things! Which is fine because everyone is entitled to their own opinions. All I’m saying is these tips and tricks have been working for me recently, so I hope by sharing them with you, you’ll see a notice in your engagement too!♡
You see them everywhere…but, do they actually help? In my opinion YES they do. I always use hashtags that are related to what I do (in my niche) that way people can find my page more easily! Also, after reading “How to Get Brand Deals as an Influencer” from my girl Autum’s website, I started using “Display Purposes” because she mentioned that it helps her find the perfect hashtags to use on pictures and I agree with her. It’s a hashtag generator that basically does all the work for you! All you have to do is type in a keyword (e.g., #beautyblogger) that you want your hashtags to be about and BAM it will give you 3o hashtags to copy and paste into your comment section.
***Keep in mind that Instagram only allows a max of 30 hashtags!
② Engagement Groups:
What is an engagement group? An engagement group is a group chat on Instagram where you share your posts in the chat and people will comment/like on your post as you do the same for them. It’s a great way to boost your engagement and make new friends! This one engagement group that I’m in is so FUN, and all of us became close friends over the past couple of months! We basically hype each other up all the time.?
But, here’s the thing. Some say Instagram hates engagement groups and that being a part of one doesn’t really do anything and others say Instagram could care less haha. Which one is it? I have no idea. For me, I find that being apart of engagement groups are helpful and fun, so I’m going to keep being apart of them.
My advice is to try one out and see how you like it! Reach out to other Instagrammers in your niche and ask them if they would want to be a part of an engagement group. I’m 99% sure that you’ll make some great friendships along the way. 🙂
③ Following people in your niche:
Like I was saying earlier finding people in your niche will help you out! Whenever I’m looking for people to follow I try to find fashion or lifestyle bloggers because that’s what I consider myself to be! By following people in your niche, you’re more likely to engage with their content and vice versa! Plus, you’ll be able to relate to them more and build a friendship talking about things you both love!
④ Don’t edit your caption after you posted:
So, I’m not entirely sure if this one is true or not, but I thought I would throw it in here. A few friends of mine have told me NOT to edit my Instagram captions after posting because it will reset my engagement ranking and basically send my picture on its way to perform poorly. A few days later, I was on Google and researched a little on this topic which led me to this article that talks all about this issue! Feel free to check it out and cultivate your own thoughts on Instagram and the algorithm.
⑤ *Check your insights:
This tip is for those with business accounts on Insta (since personal accounts do not have the features to check insights)! I highly recommend you check your insights often because it will tell you so much information that can help you out. I am always checking mine because it helps me figure out what time I should post! All you have to do is go to your profile → tap the three lines in the right-hand corner → click insights → tap on audience and scroll down to the bottom if you’re looking for data on what is the best time to post.
That’s all I have for today ladies and gentlemen! I hope this blog post helps some of you guys out, but please keep in mind that these tricks and tips that I’ve personally been using have made a positive effect on my engagement (and I hope they do for you too). I am by no means an Instagram wizard who knows everything about it, but I still thought it would be a great idea to share my little tricks on how I boost my engagement!
