So I am VERY excited about today’s blog post because I am going to be talking about #nytgetwiththetimes! Thank you to InfluencHER Collective and The New York Times for sponsoring today’s blog post (and providing me with this CUTE tote bag😉)!
What is #nytgetwiththetimes?
For starters, The New York Times (NYT) is one of America’s BIGGEST newspaper that is based in well…New York City duh! The NYT is a prime example of high-quality journalism and continues to have a massive influence on the world. As an aspiring journalist, I am thrilled to be working with the New York Times on this campaign and see it as an opportunity to grow as a writer.
To continue, for the past couple of years the New York Times has put on a live series college event program called “Get with the Times,” via watch parties at campuses across the US. This live series is dedicated to exploring some of the most provocative and timely issues that students face today. The New York Times pairs some of its elite journalists with public figures, who will share their stories and answer questions live. This year the two incredible speakers for the event are…*drumroll please*…Ashley Graham (March 31st) and Alexis Ohanian (April 17). But, today I am going to be focusing on Graham’s speech since it’s the one that just premiered!
Where can I watch this live series?
This event is happening on March 31, 2019 at 6:30 PM ET/ 3:30 PM PT so tune in for an unfiltered discussion about culture, business, beauty and the importance of empowerment — on and off the runway with Ashley and Joanna Nikas, The New York Times’s Fashion & Style editor.
You can access the link to watch through the @nytimes twitter page! So you want to make sure that you are following them. 🙂 Also, feel free to turn on the notifications on their page, so you know right away when the link is tweeted out.
Reshaping Beauty with Ashley Graham
About the Speaker:
Ashley Graham is a well-known supermodel, designer, author, podcaster and television host…she does it all people! But, she is also a body activist who has reshaped the fashion, media and beauty industries by encouraging everyone to celebrate their authentic selves — no retouching required.
Recap of the live event:
So, I just got done watching the live stream as I’m writing this and wow I took so much away from it. First of all, I LOVE Ashley even more now because she has such a fun, sparky personality. I’ve never watched a sit-down interview with her ’till today and I’m like, “What have I been missing out on? This girl is amazing!” She is such a great public speaker and makes you feel like it’s just her and you talking, having a girls night.
While I was watching the video, I was taking notes (not pictured lol I snapped the picture above when it first started) of some of the key points I wanted to address in my blog post. Joanna and Ashley talked about important topics like inclusivity, overcoming rejection, self-confidence, and more!
As someone who is going into the entertainment industry I found it insightful to learn how Ashley deals with rejection, finds her own ways to stand out from the crowd, and not letting the answer “No” effect her at all.
☆Important Topics that Ashley addressed☆
★ Speaking your truth
One thing that I took away when Ashley was talking about “speaking your truth” is that we ALL have a voice so let’s put it to use and make something positive come out of it. I’m assuming most of us have social media right? Ok well, that means we ALL have a platform that we can use to spread positivity around and make changes if we wanted to. Us humans can’t be afraid to speak our truths because if we don’t speak up, nothing will ever change.
“You go start doing it”
“Tell people what you want to do”
“Speak it into existence”
All of these quotes that Ashley said during the live stream stood out to me because when she was talking about building your own company, she kept reiterating the idea of “just do it.” You hear that quote EVERYWHERE nowadays and not just on Nike commercials. So what’s stopping you? Go out there and build your dream life! Manifest your dreams, and they will soon become a reality. Life is too short to not go after what you want!
★ Interview Tips
When Ashley started talking about tips for interviews that’s when I started taking notes like a mad woman haha. If you don’t know, I am currently studying broadcast journalism in school so this topic relates to me. I am constantly asking myself “How can I be the best reporter out there?” “What do I ask?,” so I was super excited when Ashley gave her tips on interviewing.
Her advice to the people watching is that you…
- Have to understand the person you are interviewing and get to know who they are and what they do.
- Come up with your own questions! No one wants to be asked those basic questions like “Where do you see yourself in 5 years?” all the time!
- If you make a mistake on live tv, it’s ok just laugh it off (hopefully I will be able to do that if it ever happens lol)
- And last, be real!
★ Overcoming Rejection
Rejection SUCKS so much but it’s just part of life. Overcoming rejection is weird sometimes because half of you wants to have a pity party for yourself and the other half wants to get up and move on to bigger and better things. Well, if you watched this live event as well, you would know that Ashley uses rejection to make her stronger and more determined to do better next time. She states that “There’s always room for improvement.” Which is true because you can always better yourself! Next time rejection comes and smacks you in the face just brush it off (because maybe it wasn’t meant to be) and tell yourself I’ll get them next time!
Some of my fav quotes Ashley said in regards to rejection↓
“Not everything is going to be yours”
“Not everything is going to come so easy”
“Keep it moving”
“There’s always something bigger and better on the other side.”
★ Your mindset
Your mindset is everything! It sets the mood for the day, your intentions, and so much more. It’s important to have a positive mindset because if you are telling yourself that you are “not good enough” or “not smart enough” then you are setting yourself up for failure. A positive mind → positive vibes → positive life. That’s why Ashley came up with her own daily affirmation when she was 18 that goes like this: “I am bold, I am brilliant, I am beautiful, I am worthy of all, I love you.” This is such a great affirmation; in my opinion, I’m thinking about saying this to myself every day. All in all, remember that your words have power and if you need to change them then change them!
Well, I hope you guys enjoyed today’s blog post. It was such an honor to work with The New York Times and InfluenceHer Collective on this campaign. Thank you again for sponsoring today’s blog post! But, I hope you all took something away from the live stream (or this post). Let’s use our platforms on social media to spread positive messages around and speak up for what WE believe in! I’ll talk to you guys in my next blog post.♡
