Hey Babes! Can you believe it’s already been a year of A Scorpio’s Style?!
It feels like just yesterday I was working on my blog, scared to publish it because I was SO nervous about what people would think and scared of judgment.
Oh, how things have changed in the past year, and it’s cool to see how much I’ve grown, as well as my blog.
For starters, starting this blog was hands down the best decision I’ve ever made because it helped me grow as a person. When I launched my blog I was a recent high school graduate who was shy, learning how to overcome anxiety, and cared way too much about what others thought…so starting this blog was a BIG (and I mean BIG) leap out of my comfort zone. But, like my wonderful boss, Jess always says “life begins at the end of your comfort zone,” and I could not agree more!
I did not think I was capable of launching my own website and putting out content. I always thought of myself of this quiet girl who sits back and watches, but something in me told me to take a leap of faith and just DO IT. And, I’m so grateful that I decided to go for it because without this blog I wouldn’t be where I am today! I know that sounds cheesy as heck, but it’s true because if I weren’t blogging, I would probably still be a nursing major, going to school for something that I don’t love, and still in my shy little turtle shell. Now, I’m not COMPLETELY out of my “shy shell,” but that’s something that I’m still working on every single day!
So, now that I’ve poured my heart out a little (lol) let me break it down on how my blog, A Scorpio’s Style, has taught me MANY things and has brought me some pretty AMAZING opportunities.
What I’ve Learned:
☆ Don’t compare yourself to others: Obviously, there are so many bloggers/social media influencers out there on the web that it can be really easy to compare yourself to others. Been there, done that honey! I follow a handful of people on the ‘gram who inspire me to get more creative with my content, but I find myself comparing my Instagram to theirs, quite often. Some days I’ll be like “How are they growing so fast? What am I doing wrong.” When that happens, I need to click off the app and remind myself that everyone goes and achieves different milestones at their own pace. Just remember that.
★ Networking is key: Putting yourself out there can be super scary but let me tell you it’s so worth it! This past year I’ve reached out to so many people who have helped me in a variety of ways. I have connected with some pretty cool gals who have helped guide me with academic (and career) advice…you know who you are pretty ladies. As well as connected with some girls who can relate to my #bloggerstruggles. I enjoy meeting new people who have the same interests as me because it’s nice to bond over stuff like that, in my opinion.
☆ Time Management is essential: Okay so I’m a full-time college student (I like to be buckwild and take a lot of units each semester…not sure why tbh), I have an internship, I love to help others out with their social media needs, and I run my own blog?! YA so if you couldn’t tell time management is VERY important to me because if I don’t have things in order, I’m a mess!! I’m that person that will stress out over EVERYTHING (just ask my mom lol), so I like to keep all my tasks organized in a handy-dandy planner to make sure that I’m keeping up with deadlines. Planning out my week and what I have to do has helped me stay organized and not have a panic attack at 11:30 pm freaking out that I won’t get everything done. So, if you’re a busy person like myself, I suggest that you get a planner if you don’t already!
What I’ve Gained:
★ My FIRST Internship: Shortly after launching my blog I got my first internship with Jessica Carroll, digital entrepreneur, and on-camera host, aka the sweetest and coolest person you’ll ever meet. I’ve been interning for Jess for almost a year now (you guys should know who she is by now?) and I can say that I’ve learned so much about social media, broadcast journalism, and school. She teaches me about important things I’ll need to know for my future career but also gives me advice about life! I appreciate her so much.
☆ Friends around the world: Okay so this is one of the best things that blogging has brought me…friends from all over the place. I’ve connected with so many different people who I adore and always am inspired by from blogging. Once, I started blogging, a few weeks later I started taking Instagram seriously (aka buying a preset and paying for a Lightroom subscription), and that’s when I began to meet people who had the same passion as myself. It’s really neat to connect with others who support you and your dreams. Instagram…actually the internet, in general, should be a place where everyone helps one another, instead of trying to tear each other down! Let’s remember to spread LOVE not hate.
So shout out to all the people I’ve connected with this past year! You all rock and thank you for your never-ending support and just know that the feeling is mutual.
★ Major: WOW ok I should have put this first, but my blog has had a significant impact on my college major (I’m serious). So let’s flashback to before my blog, just a 17 yr old girl who had just graduated high school, and was getting ready to start her first semester of college as a…NURSING MAJOR. Yeah don’t know what I was thinking because I am the BIGGEST germaphobe EVER and I hate anything that has to deal with blood or needles #gross, but there I was going into the field of well LOTS OF BLOOD and needles lol. With that being said, my blog helped me realize my passion for writing, fashion, and celebrities. So I got me thinking, and I was like “hmmm what if I do something related to the entertainment industry?,” and BAM that’s when I realized that I wanted to be a broadcast journalism major because I can continue to write and have the chance to talk about things that I LOVE!
Really glad I had that mid-life crisis at the age of 17 bc you know would not be doing something that I don’t love for the rest of my life. Life is too short for that!
☆ Communication Skills: Throughout the year I’ve had the amazing chance to work with some brands and reach out to some as well. I’ve improved on my communication skills because I’ve learned how to communicate with professional brands properly and learned to speak up if something isn’t right. Also, being present on social media has taught me how to get out there more and network with people (like I said earlier)!
★ Self-Confidence: Last but certainly not least this blog has helped me out with my self-esteem. It takes a lot to put yourself out there on social media (especially when it can be so cruel sometimes) and learn how not to care so much what people think, which is easier said than done…trust me I would know. But, at the end of the day, you have to believe in yourself because that’s when the magic really starts happening.
Always remember to do what makes YOU happy.
All in all, this past year has been full of amazing things. This blog has brought me so much happiness, and I can’t wait to continue to grow with it over time. Thank you to everyone who has supported me and this little blog of mine! Your kinds words never go unnoticed. I hope I inspired some of you to take the leap maybe and start your own blog! You won’t regret it I promise.?I hope you enjoyed reading this and I’ll talk to you guys in my next blog post, BYEEE!
